Must Have Requirements for Setting up an Aquarium...

1) Gravel

  • Gravel helps for Biological Filtration.
  • Help for the Growth of live Plants.
  • Different Sizes are available in the Market
  • Gravels which are made by chemicals or Chemical Coated or Painted Should be Avoided

How Much Gravel is needed for Aquarium?

  • 2 To 3 inches of Gravel is Must and Should
  • A Bed should be created in Aquarium, and Natural fresh water stones are higly preferred as they help us in Maintaining the PH level of water.

How to Clean Gravel?

Never Wash Gravel in Soap water or any other chemical which may harm the Fishes.

Never Clean all the gravel in an Aquarium at A time, it will destroy the Nitrogen Cycle

Half at a Time Cleaning is Highly preferred...

These days we can find good number of Gravel Cleaners.... by using them we need not to remove the gravel from Aquarium too..

2) Air Pump

  • First and Important thing i would like to say here is Air Pump Doesn't provide Oxygen Directly.. In-fact it helps to increase oxygen levels in Aquarium by breaking the Water Surface.
So is it Compulsory to Have Air Pump in the Aquarium?

It is the most Discussed Question in Aquarium forums i have to say..
I suggest to Buy one irrespective of the size of Aquarium...

Fish wont feel uncomfortable with the bubbles...

There are only Advantages of having the air pump..

Few are

Oxygen levels are improved..

Bad Gases are exhausted in the form of air bubbles..

Helps to Create waves.. by which fishes can have a natural feeling...

One suggestion here is...

Go for Stone Rather than Decorative Air Bubblers....

Reason here is simple.. Air Stone breaks the surface more than any decorative bubblers...

150 gallon 72" x 18" x 28"
180 Gallon 72" x 24" x 25"

Which Size is Better?

May be this question have striken you harder when looking those Sizes.

For instance if some one asks you..in which room you will be more comfortable congested room or Spacious room?

Obviously the answer would be Spacious.

same with Fishes too.. they love to swim a lot..hence forth they really need large Aquariums..

Advantages of Large Aquariums

  • Fishes get huge Space to swim
  • Water wont get polluted more... when compared to small aquarium.
  • Helps to Build A Community Aquarium(various species in one aquarium)
  • More Space to keep Decoratives
  • Increased Oxygen levels..
  • Last but not least..it will be A Feast for Eyes.
Whats wrong with Small Aquariums?

  • Need high level of Observation.
  • Water can be polluted within no time.
  • Oxygen levels will decrease within 48hours.
  • Fish feel insecure.
  • FIsh gets easily stressed... Since they dont have place to hide
  • Fish may hurt themselves, by hitting to decoratives or filters.eetc..
  • looks cute too eyes..But it is more like hell to the fishes..

What exactly is Considered to be Big Size/ Small Size for Aquarium?

Well it completely relies on the Growth of Fish..

I shall discuss about the fish growth in separate post...

But for instance.. One gallon one inch fish rule should be followed..

By this pretty rule..

A 10 gallon aquarium can accommodate  2 pairs of fishes..provided fishes growth is max 2 inches..

Does Shape of Aquarium Matters?

Yes of-course it Matters.

Fishes prefer to swim in lengthy aquarium rather than a Taller aquarium..

However....few species love to swim in deeper sections....for those kind of fishes...taller aquarium create enough depth...
